A test that changed the table
At 7:15 in the morning on November 1, 1952, the United States detonated Ivy Mike on Elugelab Island in the Enewetak Atoll. It was the first full-scale test of a hydrogen bomb, and its force vaporized the island where the device stood.
Among the enormous cloud of debris were atoms created in the intense burst of neutrons. Weeks later, teams collected and examined the fallout. Their work revealed two elements that had never existed in measurable amounts before: einsteinium, element 99, and fermium, element 100.
Finding a few atoms
Einsteinium was not discovered by seeing a shiny sample or weighing a mineral. Researchers identified it by separating radioactive material and following its decay. The signal was tiny: only a handful of atoms, each destined to transform in a matter of days.
The element was named to honor Albert Einstein. Its discovery demonstrated that nuclear reactions could build heavier nuclei beyond uranium, extending the actinide series and giving scientists new material for studying the structure of matter.

Today, einsteinium is made atom by atom in specialized reactors. Its scarcity and radioactivity make ordinary uses impossible, but those same properties make it valuable to nuclear chemists. Each carefully produced atom helps map the limits of the periodic table.
